1974 Porsche 911 – Beginning the rust repairs

We saw the rust damage to the front torsion mounts from below the car, but peeling away the gas tank support revealed all of the damage, including some minor rust damage in the side rails which will be repaired.

Depending on where you look, the 911 can have as many as 4 layers of sheet metal to get through to take things apart. We’re very deliberate in trying to do this with as little destruction as possible in an attempt to preserve as much of the original car as possible. We grind stitch and spot welds where possible to peel layers away and drill out spot welds as needed.

We’ve removed the rusty suspension pan while preserving as much of the lateral supports as possible. We’ll be making some small patch panels to repair the rust in the sides once the main pan is welded in place. Restoration Design of Ontario, Canada, makes some excellent repair sections which only need some minor adjustments to fit beautifully. We’re in the process now of test-fitting and making those adjustments.
