MGB GT V8 – Welding it back together

With the repair pieces fitted and measurements triple-checked, we started welding the parts into place.

We used plug welds where the original spot welds were.

Where we combined the old rails with the new rails, we put fishplates (not shown) behind the butt welds and put additional plug welds in to hold the fishplates. The welds tend to be ugly with our “stacking the tack” method, but the method ensures good penetration while minimizing warp. It allows us to grind the welds flush and have them almost disappear.

We test fitted the crossmember and steering rack to ensure good alignment.

We used one of our fixtures to put the motor mounts in.

Once painted, the repair will be invisible.
